This poem was written on the Write, Revive & Rebuild programme - the group used Simon Armitage's poem, 'It ain't what you do, it's what it does to you,' as a model for their own poems by exploring the importance of the everyday things we do or achieve that we don't always find time to praise ourselves for.![]()

I’ve never run a marathon![]()
Or seen the Northern lights![]()
I’ve never been to Disney Land![]()
Or driven an enormous van![]()
But I have held my son’s small hand while he cried amongst the sand![]()
And whispered quietly in his ear that I love him dear![]()

I’ve never met a celebrity![]()
Or won a posh award![]()
I’ve never cycled down the road![]()
Or ever seen a terrible ghost![]()
But I have rocked my son to sleep when things were just too much![]()
And told him that I love him so with every part of me![]()

I’ve never invented anything grand![]()
Or even wrote a thrilling book![]()
I’ve never learned an instrument![]()
Or flown around the world![]()
But I have looked after my trembling son while he laid upon the bed![]()
And made sure that he felt secure and safe within my arms![]()

I’ve never been to Glastonbury![]()
Or displayed a piece of art![]()
But I have held my son for hours while he cried upon the floor![]()
And told him that he’ll be ok and that I’m there for him![]()

I’ve never placed myself before upon a great big yacht![]()
Or even swam the channel sea for the NSPCC![]()
But I have stroked my son’s brown hair while he was in despair![]()
And even held him close to me when he was so afraid![]()
