Self-harm is a behaviour, not an illness. People self-harm to cope with emotional pain and communicate to others that they are distressed. Some reasons people have given for self-harming are feeling bad or worthless; wanting to feel something rather than just numb; wanting to feel in control when their lives are really stressful.
If you get help with the emotional problems that have led to self-harm the behaviour will stop. A GP will refer you get the right treatment and support you in making some choices about what will help you.

Panic attacks are an extreme reaction to anxiety; they can happen if you are really scared or anxious, or sometimes when nothing at all has happened. A panic attack can be really upsetting; sweating, heart pounding, feeling dizzy or faint and feeling like you can’t breathe.
All the symptoms of a panic attack are caused by a rush of a hormone called adrenalin and then breathing too fast. The adrenalin wears off after a few minutes but if the fast breathing carries on you will still feel really ill. Learning how to control your breathing and slow it down is a really good way to manage panic attacks. Talking therapy is really useful and with help most people are able to overcome panic attacks.

Someone might have suicidal thoughts for any number of reasons: bullying, poor exam results, relationship problems, discrimination and many other problems can lead someone to thinking of suicide. The best thing to do if you’re feeling like this is to talk to someone straight away; a friend, trusted teacher, family member or a helpline.
Talking through the problems can help you get some ideas on how to deal with them, and they won’t feel nearly so bad once shared.

We all sometimes talk about stress, and feeling stressed, usually when we feel we have too much to do and too much on our minds. When other people are making unreasonable demands on us with homework or exams; or we are dealing with situations that we do not have control over, like family stuff or being bullied.
We can feel stressed in loads of ways; sometimes feeling angry, or crying, or just wanting to run away from everything.
Taking good care of ourselves; trying not to feel pressured into doing too much and following some of the ideas in the self help pages here can all help relieve some of the stresses.
